Filing a Roof Insurance Claim After a Louisiana Storm

New Orleans homeowner reviewing roof insurance paperwork with a contractor

Louisiana homeowners face named storms regularly, and most policies cover hurricane wind and hail damage to roofs. The difference between a quick, full-pay claim and a denied or shorted one usually comes down to documentation and a few simple do-nots.

Step 1 — Call your carrier first

Open the claim with your insurance company directly. Write down the claim number. They’ll assign an adjuster within a few days (longer in major storm events).

Step 2 — Call a licensed local roofer

Have BH Roofing NOLA out for a free inspection. We document with drone photography and provide an Xactimate-formatted scope your adjuster recognizes. We meet the adjuster on the roof.

Step 3 — Do not sign an AOB

Avoid any roofer who asks you to sign an Assignment of Benefits. You should stay in control of your claim and your check. We don’t use AOBs.

Step 4 — Pay only your deductible

It is a felony in Louisiana for a contractor to ‘absorb’ your deductible. Any roofer offering that is putting your claim and your insurance relationship at risk.
